TIN Certificate
Tax Registration in Sri Lanka
Register as a taxpayer and get your Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) with the Inland Revenue Department — handled end to end by eSecretary.
With the commencement of the incorporated company, the company should pay relevant taxes such as Income Tax, Value Added Tax (VAT), Pay As You Earn tax (PAYE/APIT) and Stamp Duty to the Inland Revenue Department. To pay these taxes, the company first has to obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number by registering with the Department.
What your company may need to register for
TIN — Taxpayer Identification Number
Every incorporated company must register with the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) and obtain a TIN before it pays any tax in Sri Lanka.
The TIN is also required for opening a corporate bank account, EPF/ETF payments, tax clearance certificates and most official transactions.
Registration is done online through the IRD e-services system using a prescribed application form and supporting documents.
VAT — Value Added Tax
VAT is charged at 18% on most goods and services in Sri Lanka.
A company must register for VAT once its annual taxable turnover crosses the registration threshold set by the IRD — or earlier, if it expects to. Voluntary registration is also possible.
VAT returns are filed every month, so registering on time avoids penalties and backdated liabilities.
SVAT — Suspended VAT for exporters
Exporters that supply most of their goods or services abroad can apply for the SVAT scheme: VAT on imports and local purchases is suspended and the difference is settled through quarterly returns instead of cash payments.
SVAT is being transitioned to a refund/credit mechanism, so we check which route fits your business and handle the application with the IRD.
Corporate Income Tax
Registered companies pay income tax on annual profits — 30% at the standard rate, with concessionary 15% rates for qualifying exports, small and medium enterprises and other approved activities.
The first step is a TIN and an active tax file with the IRD, followed by quarterly installments and an annual income tax return.
PAYE / APIT on employment income
If your company employs staff, it must register for Advance Personal Income Tax (APIT) and deduct PAYE from employees' taxable earnings each month, remitting it to the IRD.
Other registrations
Depending on your business we also register companies for levies such as SSCL (Social Security Contribution Levy) and Stamp Duty, and set up your IRD e-services profile so future returns can be filed online.
How we register your company

We prepare and file the TIN application
We complete the prescribed application form, draft the authorization letter and submit the registration through IRD e-services.
